Week IV Newsletter

Tue Oct 21, 2008, 5:26 AM
Hello, and welcome to your friendly PhotoSoc newsletter! We've got a few bits and pieces to tell you about this week, so keep your eyes peeled and read on to find out....

~~*Contents*~~

Training
Competition
Photo Opp-Good Food Soc
Photo Survey

~~*Training*~~
The first training session of the year will be held on Wednesday 22nd October from 6 to 7pm in SO.21 (just inside the main entrance of the social studies building). This session will take the form of a talk, and will provide a basic introduction to the types of cameras, some of their features as well some general composition and advice to get you started with photography at Warwick. There will also be an opportunity to ask general questions.

Because of the number of people who are requesting training the session will be fairly general. Future sessions however will be geared more towards photographers of different abilities, and will look at specific areas of photography in greater depth. Photographers who already have some experience are welcome to attend, but may find they already know much of what is being covered.

~~*Competition, Comment Critique*~~
Well done to Anne Billows whose photo was chosen as the best in last week's comment and critique session, and who has picked the new theme of Autumn on Campus. Get your cameras at the ready, as you have two weeks to snap a photo on this theme (photos taken last week are also permissible). An email will be sent out in the next few days specifying the time and place for the next competition/ comment critique session, so be sure to check your inboxes! Email your photo to su296@sunion.warwick.ac.uk.

~~*Good Food Soc Photo Opportunity*~~
Week 4 is National Baking Week, and to celebrate it, Good Food Soc are having a bake-off and a tea party on Wednesday, week 4, held at TCO Deli in Coventry. They'd like someone to cover this event, and it provides an ideal opportunity to not only sample some delicious cake but to hone your photography skills. The event starts at two, and leaves from campus. If you'd like to photograph it, please email r.davies.3@warwick.ac.uk asap!

~~*Photo Questionnaire*~~
At [link] there is a quick survey that wed like you to fill in. There are two reasons that were sending you this, firstly to find out what kind of photography youre interested in and want to learn about; and secondly to find out what cameras and equipment you already have. Dont worry if you dont have a camera of your own, the whole point of the equipment sections on this questionnaire is to find out what society members really need us to spend the society budget on buying for you guys! Please email su296@sunion.warwick.ac.uk with the completed survey word file attached, by Thursday of Week 4.

Also, just a reminder for you to join or check our facebook group, located at [link] Through this group, you'll be able to recieve the most-up-to date information about events, and chat to other members. Remember that you need to be a member of the Warwick network to join, and hopefully we'll see you there!

Week IX newsletter & Sports Week

---=== PhotoSoc Week IX newsletter ===---

Hello, and welcome to your slightly earlier than usual newsletter. We have a plethora of socials coming up in the next two weeks.

~~*Contents*~~
Top B Social
Film Showing- Dr Strangelove
Stratford-upon-Avon trip
BBQ Social
End of term meal
WSAF Shootout

~~*Top B Social*~~
Just a reminder that we have a Top B social this Monday! As posted in last week's newsletter- Now that exams are finally over you've no excuse not to come to come to the TopB social we're having on the 16th June. It's going to be the last TopB social we have in the current union so come along at around 9.30pm to make sure we give the union a good seeing off. We'll be around Cholo but if you can't find us give me a ring on 07949314637.

~~*Film Showing*~~
Dr Strangelove

Before becoming a film director, Stanley Kubrick was an obsessional teenage photographer, eventually landing himself a position on the staff of Life Magazine. His eye for photographs comes through in his films, with careful use of light and composition contributing to the mood of many of his films.

Dr.Strangelove (or how I learnt to stop worrying and love the bomb) is a cold war comedy about the laughable farce of nuclear war, and centres around an impending nuclear apocalypse brought on by a mad American general. Despite the subject matter the film is an unabashed comedy, with Peter Sellers, Stirling Hayden and George C. Scott delivering hysterical performances as war obssessed generals, an incompetent British air force officer and a deranged Nazi scientist. Whether watched for the comedy, the politics or the cinematography, Dr.Strangelove is a film well worth seeing.

Plan is to show the film at 7pm on Tuesday 17th in SO.18 again, but as the room booking hasn’t been confirmed keep an eye on the facebook event in case this changes.

~~*Stratford-upon-Avon*~~
We're running a trip to Stratford-upon-Avon on Wednesday week nine (18th). Stratford-upon-Avon is the birthplace of Shakespeare and is a really photogenic location. We'll be catching the number 16 bus at 13:02 but as the busses are only every hour we'll be meeting at the top of the Piazza at 12:45. If you can’t find us or get lost on the day give me a ring on 07949314637.

~~*BBQ Social*~~
In what's fast becoming a bi-termly event we're having another BBQ on Thursday Week Nine (19th). If you're not getting all dressed up for the Final Fling come and meat us on the top of the Piazza at 3pm then we'll head to Rootes Field. It is bring your own meat but we'll provide the BBQs and fire!

~~*End of Term Meal*~~
Being the classy society that we are we're going to have an end of term meal! It's going to be held at Prezzo in Leamington Spa on Thursday Week Ten (26th). We'll be heading there around 5pm but I need to get an idea of what numbers to book the table for. Please email the society at su296@sunion.warwick.ac.uk confirming you want to come to this meal so I can get a table booked. Please make sure you've emailed by the 19th. For those of you that are coming to Budapest this would be a good opportunity to have a chat and get to know other members.

~~*WSAF Shootout*~~
We have one place remaining if you would like to cover the WSAF Shootout! More details are located at [link] Email su296@sunion.warwick.ac.uk, but remember it's first-come-first-served!
